Spanish varieties and Spanglish in the United States

This work is dedicated to the study of Spanish language and the influence it has on English in the territory of the United States of America. The main emphasis is put on the variety of Spanglish. The work is divided into four sections. The first part is focusing on the history and the current state of the Spanish language in Northern America. The language is being divided into basic subgroups. The second part consists of the terminology used thorough this subsequent thesis. As for the third part, it is dealing wih Spanglish and its main characteristics. The final seccion is based on a survey that was realized by means of an Internet questionnaire. The thesis is putting stress on the reciprocal influence of the two languages and the comprehensibility of collected data. Vitality of the current Galician language

Mgr. Lenka Picková Vitality of the current Galician language Abstract: Never in the field of human history has the dying out of languages been as intense as it is in the present day. The goal of this paper is to assess the vitality of the one of the co- official languages in Spain, the Galician language. After an indispensable definition of the social-historical context, a deep, qualitative and quantitative analysis of nine factors is performed: inter-generational language transmission, education, the absolute and relative number of speakers, trends in existing language domains and media, governmental and institutional language attitudes, and, above all, the attitudes of Galician citizens toward their languages. In the final chapter, a summary of the results of these individual factors, as well as an assessment of their influence on the vitality of the Galician language, is provided. Languages in Contact: Spanish and Native American Languages in Historical Perspective

This thesis looks into the issue of language contact between Spanish and indigenous American languages in a historical perspective. Firstly, the thesis defines fundamental terms for this topic and subsequently explores the situation of Spanish and indigenous languages after the year 1492. The encounter of these two cultures happened unexpectedly and both sides had to deal with complicated communication situation. For that reason this thesis includes the topic of nonverbal communication which was very important especially at the beginning of the contact, as well as the role of an interpreter. The thesis also deals with the topic of evolution of Spanish in America and theories of its particularity. After that this thesis concentrates on the ways of defining new realities of discovered world and enriching Spanish with loanwords from native languages. Then, typology and semantic classification is mentioned.
The Characteristics of Costa Rican Spanish

This work deals with the variant of Spanish in Costa Rica and together with the phonological, morphosyntactical and lexical aspects examines languages in conctact and its influence on the lexical system. Apart from the data published in the Linguistic-enthnographic Atlas of Costa Rica the work presents also an investigation made by the author among the inhabitants of the central part of Costa Rica and compares it with other publications of the local lingüists who deal with the dialectal differences in the concrete area. At the same time its aim is to caracterize the Costa Rican variant in terms of the diversity related to the other types of Spanish and highlight the elements which appear exclusively in the speech of the inhabitants of Costa Rica. Spanish of Yucatán

This work is dedicated to the study of the dialect of Spanish at Yucatan Peninsula (Mexico). The work is divided into three sections. In the first part, the basic concepts related to the subject of the work are delimited. The second part focuses on the evolution of Spanish and Amerindian languages in Mexico, as well it includes the linguistic situation at Yucatan Peninsula and characterizes the Mayan languages. As for the third part, it consists of the analysis of Spanish of Yucatan, it includes descriptions of characteristics of phonetics, morphology and lexicology. The work emphasizes the influence of Mayan language on the dialect.

Theoretical aspects of vocabulary variability in American Spanish. Diachrony and synchrony

Theoretical aspects of vocabulary variability in American Spanish Diachrony and synchrony Anna Mištinová Abstract As a multinational and multicultural language, the Spanish language offers, despite its unity, a large number of differences on all linguistic planes. This dissertation's subject consists of an examination of fundamental theoretical questions concerning the variation of American Spanish's vocabulary on a diachronous and synchronous level. A diatopic approach in particular is employed with a focus on geographic-linguistic aspects. Based on theories of variation and other general theoretical aspects, an analysis is conducted on the differences and divergences of the lexicon in Hispano-American variations, on the main sources and causes of changes in comparison with European Spanish, on the origin and nature of the language in the early phases of the New World's conquering and the innovative influence of autochthonous substrates and adstrates. Linguistic contacts made in both the past and present occupy a significant place in this examination, and an emphasis is placed on the Spanish - indigenous languages - English triangle.
